A building’s energy performance (EP) rating
This shows the total primary energy consumption of the building with reference to the unit of usable floor area or gross volume.
Acquirente Unico S.p.A., or A.U.
AU is a public company set up by GSE, the Italian energy agency, whose task is to procure electricity, guaranteeing the supply required to meet the demand of restricted customers.
Alternating current voltage
This is the voltage between two points of a circuit which varies over time and has a sinusoidal waveform. It is the typical form of voltage found in electricity supply systems, as well as in household and industrial appliances.
Amorphous silicon
A type of silicon used in PV cells whose atoms are not linked together in a standard pattern.
Authority for Electricity and Gas (AEEG)
The independent regulatory authority entrusted with the task of ensuring the promotion of competition and efficiency of the electricity and gas industry, established in accordance with Law n. 481 dated 14th November 1995.
Azimuth
This is the angle between a point and the reference plane. In photovoltaics it refers to the coordinates, where the north pole is at 0 ° and the south at 180 °.
Bilateral agreement
An electricity supply agreement entered into outside IPEX between a producer/wholesaler and an eligible customer.
Contractual capacity
This is the amount of power contractually agreed with the local grid controller. It does not necessarily indicate the power needed, rather the maximum agreed amount of power supplied by the electrical grid.
Conversion efficiency of a photovoltaic device (in %)
Ratio between the electricity produced and the solar energy collected by the photovoltaic device.
Crystalline silicon
A type of silicon featuring a crystalline structure (monocrystalline or polycrystalline).
Cumulative Flow
This is the sum of the cash flows from year to year. If you earn €100 per year, the cash flow would be €100 the first year, €200 the second year, €300 the third and so on.
Current:
A flow of electric charges between two points in a conductor with a potential difference (voltage). It is measured in A (amperes).
DC/AC converter, inverter, inverter
A static electrical device which converts direct current into alternating current
Direct current voltage
This is the voltage between two points of a circuit which does not vary in polarity or amount over time.
Dispatching
This is the activity involving issuing instructions for the coordinated use and operation of production plants, of the power grid and of the ancillary services, whose aim is to maintain a balance between the electricity injections and withdrawals caused by the production and consumption of active and reactive power at any moment.
Electrical market
This includes the day-ahead energy market, the adjustment market, and the dispatching service market.
Electricity grid manager
This is the natural or legal person, even if not the owner, responsible for the management of an electricity grid, with the obligation to connect third parties, and the maintenance and development of the grid.
Electricity metering
This is the activity involving measuring the electricity at a feed-in point, a withdrawal point, or an interconnection point.
Eligible customer, unrestricted customer
Natural or legal person entitled to enter into supply agreements with any supplier of their choice (producer, utility provider, wholesaler).
Energy account
While the term "capital account incentives" refers to subsidised investments for the construction of power plants, the term "energy account" refers to incentives that include payment for the electricity produced by a plant for a certain number of years.
Energy Performance Certificate (for a building)
Document, prepared in accordance with the law by accredited parties, stating the building’s energy performance, or the annual amount of primary energy required to meet the different needs associated with standard building use.
Energy performance certification (for a building)
The set of operations, carried out by accredited parties, necessary for the issue of energy performance certificates and the advice on how to improve a building’s energy performance.
Gestore del Mercato Elettrico - GME S.p.A
GME is the company set up by GSE to handle the economic management of the electricity market, according to criteria of transparency and objectivity, in order to promote competition among producers and ensure availability of a sufficient power reserve level.
Grid connection point
A boundary point between the utility provider or the controller’s grid and the customer's system or grid.
Grid-connected photovoltaic system
Photovoltaic system connected to the electricity distribution grid
High Voltage (HV)
Rated voltage between the electrical phases of the photovoltaic module above 35 kW and equal to or less than 150 kW.
Irradiation
The instantaneous solar radiation (thus power) impacting the unit of surface area. This is measured in kW/m2.
Italian Power Exchange (IPEX)
This the virtual marketplace where wholesale electricity trading takes place.
Kilowatt (kW)
Multiple of the unit of measurement of power equal to 1,000 watts.
Kilowatt hour (kW)
Unit of measurement of energy. A kilowatt hour is the energy consumed by a 1 kW appliance.
Low voltage (LV)
Rated voltage between the electrical phases equal to or less than 1 kW.
